Hacking

Just recently we had a DOS attack that we were able to trace back to a Chinese IP address. When this happened it really opened my eyes to hacking and I felt I needed to do a little reading on why this is done. In todays world there are two different types of hacking that are very common place in an IT environment. One is necessary to be sure that we are secure in our working and one is more or less for sport. Ethical and non-ethical hacking.

Ethical Hacking

Hacking a computer is regularly done in many companies where they hack the computer and based on vulnerability (loop holes in a computer) found by them they build the firewall. It’s done completely for Ethical reasons. For example the windows security updates they update regularly. It is not uncommon that hacking is done prior to the release of new software to test its ability to withstand such attacks.

Unethical Hacking

I get theft. People steal data for their own personal gain all the time. Credit card info, ID theft, and the such make perfect sense to me. However, hacking just to do damage to someone or something is foreign to me. I do not and will not ever understand how someone can get personal satisfaction from watching others suffer. While I feel this way I will also say that unethical hacking is far more interesting for me to read about.

Has anyone out there ever hacked or been hacked. Please feel free to share your stories.
